The Agenda

Last night I was part of a panel that discussed anxiety and the university experience. If that seems like something you’d like to watch, here it is!

On the radio again, this time with CBC!

So, that bike letter got more response than I could have imagined. I was invited to be interviewed on CBC’s Metro Morning to discuss my letter and the divided responses to it. The podcast is here.

Also! If you’re not sick of me talking about cycling, here’s a talk with James King and me on OpenFile.

Social networks & the BBC

I was fortunate enough to be on the BBC’s World Have Your Say program last week with Sherry Turkle, who argues that technology (cell phones & social networks) impacts how people relate to one another in “real life.” The Seattle Times on her book:

“Alone Together” continues “the story of the digital culture … with a focus on the young … ‘digital natives’ growing up with cellphones and toys that love.” Turkle now finds her natural optimism under siege as she reports her key finding: “These days, insecure in our relationships and anxious about intimacy, we look to technology for ways to be in relationships and protect ourselves from them at the same time.”

During the show I take on the role of hearty tweeter and don’t really get to ask any smart questions (for example, what is “authenticity” when it comes to communicating via technology or social networks; what is your opinion on “digital natives” who do use in moderation; what of the many benefits of social networks…) but if you’d like to listen to me say “I heart the Internet,” you can download the podcast here. (When I have the time I will find a better audio hosting solution.) The social networks discussion occurs after the half-hour mark, so don’t be confused when the program opens with suicide bombings debate.
